Eline Lievens is a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University. As a professor, she co-chairs the Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition research group. During her PhD, she focused on the importance of muscle fiber type in sports. With her doctorate, she won the cross-disciplinary PhD Award from the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek-Vlaanderen (FWO) and BiR&D (Belgian Industrial Research & Development), as well as the Audience Award and the Jury Award of the Flemish PhD Cup 2022.
She is now using her extensive knowledge of muscle fibers to research the role of muscles in the development of cardiometabolic diseases. To this end, she is setting up a longitudinal study that looks at how functional, metabolic and structural differences between muscles play a role in the onset of various cardiometabolic disorders.
The research group of Prof. Eline Lievens and Prof. Wim Derave is bitten by muscles and movement. As physiologists, they investigate the biological function and chemical composition of skeletal muscle. This leads to new insights and applications in health, nutrition (supplements) and performance. They have a particular interest in skeletal muscle and its role in aging-related diseases, such as type-2 diabetes.
